Manual Surgical Sciences

Manual Surgical Sciences produces an inflatable balloon retractor for use when a vessel or orifice needs to be retracted from the inside. The DV8 Retractor is an esophageal balloon retractor which is intended to retain or hold back the esophagus and tissue in the course of a surgical procedure.

The DV8 Retractor

The DV8 is currently in commercial release in the US, Brazil, and is CE marked and available for sale in Europe.

How it Works

After deployment into the esophagus (orally under general anesthesia), inflation of the balloon provides gentle and effective deviation of the esophagus to place it away from other anatomy. When the procedure is completed, the device is deflated and removed.

The images below show the DV8 Retractor before and after inflation.  Superimposing the images shows that significant retraction of the esophagus can be obtained.
